World-Renowned Public Universities & Industrial Innovation
Germany is one of Europe’s most attractive destinations for international students. It is known for respected public universities, strong engineering and technology education, practical learning, research excellence, a stable economy and comparatively affordable higher education.
Many public universities charge little or no tuition for most bachelor’s and consecutive master’s programs, while students gain access to internationally recognised degrees, modern research facilities and career exposure in one of Europe’s largest economies.
At Fly Time Education Consultants, we help students choose the right German university and course, understand German and English language requirements, prepare admission documents, plan finances and apply for the appropriate study visa.
Important: German admission, visa, blocked-account, work and residence rules can change. This page reflects general information available in August 2026. A German qualification does not guarantee a visa, job, EU Blue Card or permanent residence.

Future Career & Residence: A Realistic Approach
A German degree provides internationally respected skills and access to Europe's largest job market, but it does not guarantee immediate employment, an EU Blue Card, or permanent residence. Career outcomes depend on:
- Completed academic qualification and grades
- German and English language fluency (crucial for local jobs)
- Relevant internship or workplace experience
- Securing a qualified employment offer meeting salary thresholds
- Licensing requirements for regulated professions
- Current German Skilled Immigration Act regulations
Fly Time Counseling Note: We advise choosing a course with genuine academic and career value. We guide you through eligible study routes but never make misleading migration promises.

Study Costs, Living Expenses & Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)
Public University Tuition
€0 / Tuition-Free
Semester fee: ~€150 – €350/sem (covers student union & transit ticket).
Monthly Cost of Living
€900 – €1,200
Includes rent, groceries, student health insurance, and personal expenses.
Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)
€11,904 / year
Statutory visa requirement equivalent to €992 per month.
How Does a Blocked Account (Sperrkonto) Work?
A blocked account is the primary government-mandated method for international students from non-EU countries to demonstrate sufficient financial resources for a German study visa:
- Deposit: You deposit the annual statutory amount (currently €11,904 for 12 months) before your visa interview.
- Disbursement: Upon arriving in Germany and registering your local address, you can withdraw a maximum of €992 per month to cover your living costs.
- Approved Providers: Common reputable digital providers include Expatrio, Fintiba, Coracle, and Deutsche Bank.
- Alternative Proof: An official DAAD scholarship confirmation or a formal Declaration of Commitment (Verpflichtungserklärung) from a sponsor in Germany can also be accepted.
APS Certificate (India, China, Vietnam)
Applicants from India, China, and Vietnam must obtain an Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) certificate verifying the authenticity of their educational documents before submitting university applications or booking student visa slots.
Compulsory Health Insurance
Health insurance is legally compulsory for enrolment. Students under 30 typically qualify for discounted statutory public health insurance (TK, Barmer, DAK) at ~€110–€130/month, providing comprehensive medical and hospital cover.
Student Work Rights, Post-Study Work Permit & EU Blue Card
In-Study Work Rights
International students may work up to 140 full days or 280 half days per year (or up to 20 hours per week). Mandatory curricular internships do not count against this quota.
18-Month Post-Study Permit
Upon graduating from a recognised German university, you can apply for an 18-month job seeker residence permit with unrestricted work rights to secure qualified employment.
EU Blue Card & PR Pathway
Once you land a qualified position meeting statutory salary thresholds, you can transition to a Skilled Worker Permit or EU Blue Card, leading to permanent residence (Niederlassungserlaubnis) in as little as 21–27 months.
Spouse & Family Reunification
International students can apply for family reunification for their spouse and minor children, provided they demonstrate sufficient independent finances (additional blocked amounts/income), suitable accommodation, and health insurance. Spouses granted a family residence permit generally have access to the German labour market.

Application Timeline & Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Research universities and courses (uni-assist / DAAD); prepare for IELTS/TOEFL or German tests (TestDaF); apply for APS certificate; gather academic transcripts.
Submit university applications via uni-assist or direct university portals; attend aptitude tests or interviews if required; receive admission or conditional admission letters.
Open Sperrkonto (Blocked Account) with approved provider; arrange German statutory health insurance; book German national visa appointment; submit visa application.
Register your residential address (Anmeldung); activate blocked account and health insurance; complete university matriculation (Immatrikulation); attend orientation!
Common Mistakes That Cause Delays or Rejection
- Applying without verifying exact subject-credit eligibility on the anabin database
- Assuming all 12th-grade certificates qualify for direct bachelor's admission without Studienkolleg
- Delaying APS certificate application (processing can take several weeks or months)
- Applying to a German-taught course without verified B2/C1 proficiency certification
- Underestimating accommodation shortages and initial settlement living expenses in major cities
- Relying exclusively on part-time jobs as the primary funding source for tuition or living costs
- Submitting uncertified translations or missing vital apostilles
